The internet has revolutionised the way in which we communicate, do business, buy material goods and search for things. Search sites like Google have changed the way we look for what we want, and it helps if the search engine can be used in the most efficient and best possible way. This is where search engine optimisation, or SEO, comes in.
The most basic definition of SEO is that it helps a website to come higher on the search results list of a search engine such as Google by employing certain techniques. The use of keywords is the main and one of the most effective ways to incorporate SEO into your website. If you put certain key words into the content of your website, then the search engine will pick up on them and place your web page accordingly in the search results. The more keywords you have, the better, but there are drawbacks to this way of thinking.
One of the main problems with this method is that it can be over-used and exaggerated very easily. It is generally bad practise to have whole web pages full of a certain keyword or keywords, but some websites have done this, and continue to. Search engines have picked up on this, and because it makes search results less effective, they now ban websites that do this from their search results. The hope is that they will realise they cannot get away with such crude tactics, and that they will incorporate SEO better into their web pages.
